    breanna-
you seem like a very knowledgeable young lady. my niece is 1 and was diagnosed at birth. she is the first of my 3 nieces to be diagnosed w/ pku, and I was wondering if you know if there is a test to find out if someone carries the pku gene.
    thanks for your help. andrea

    Andrea,
I’m not 100% positive on this one so don’t quote me but…as far as I know yes there is a test. I believe to figure that out you would have to get a DNA test which would tell you exactly what your DNA make up is. Although I don’t know exactly how it would work I’m assuming it’s some sort of a blood tests, but I have heard of a few people who talked about this and from what I know it would be very costly.
If you could go with your sister/brother to one of your nieces PKU appointments maybe you could ask her doctors about this. Or if you can get a hold of a genetic counselor, they work with people to find out what their chances of having a child with certain disorders, diseases etc are so they might beable to help you with this.
I hope this helps somewhat, sorry I’m not 100% familiar with this. nBreanna n16 w/CPKU
