The drawbacks of a low-Phe (phenylalanine) diet

Since the 1960s, infant screening and the low-Phe diet has helped prevent people with PKU from suffering severe mental retardation. Still, a low Phe diet doesn't always completely protect the brain. Even when people with PKU try very hard to eat right, they may still have Phe that is too high, causing problems such as mood swings, feeling foggy, or even loss of intelligence.1,3,4,5

That is why it is very important to follow the best treatment plan possible. For many people, this may include medication and access to a therapist for support, along with the low Phe diet.

Physical side effects

People with PKU have been found to have low levels of iron, vitamin A, zinc, and essential fatty acids, even when they are eating right.22 Many people with PKU also have low bone mass, despite having enough calcium and other minerals.23

Because the low Phe diet is very high in carbohydrates and fats, there is also a risk of weight gain.24

Every person is different. Work with your doctor and dietitian to address these issues if they come up for you.
