Regular checkups power your progress

As you start to take more control of what you eat, how can you know whether your choices are working out? Keep getting regular Phe checks. That's how you'll be able to see if your level is going up, down or staying stable.1 You can't guess your own Phe level accurately. Only your tested Phe level gives you the information you need to make good choices.

Celebrate when you meet target levels

Celebrate the lowering of your Phe levels

Make your Phe checkup something to celebrate. Set a goal and a reward yourself for meeting your goal, like buying a new book or taking a class for fun. When your Phe level meets the goal, you get to treat yourself! Be sure to share your news with family and with friends on the PKUniverse.

Then you may want to work with your doctor and dietitian to set an even lower goal for next time.

Remember, when it comes to Phe, lower is better.*1,2 Work with your doctor and dietitian to find the best level for you.

Look for other clues

The only way to know your Phe level for sure is a blood test. But your brain will also give you clues. Chances are your Phe is creeping up if:1,3,4,6

rising Phe levels can make you feel different

  • You feel "foggy" or can't think clearly
  • Your reaction time is slow
  • You feel very moody, sad, hurt, or angry a lot
  • You can't stay focused

When you feel this way, ask your doctor or dietitian if getting your Phe level down could help.

* Lower is better until you get Phe into the normal range of 1-2 mg/dL. Going lower than 1-2 mg/dL can be unhealthy. Talk with your doctor about the right target range for you.1,2
