Sometimes – even if you think you're doing a good job following a low Phe diet – your Phe level will rise. In fact, over half of people who think they're eating right actually have a Phe level higher than their target.20
Here are some ways to get back on track if your Phe gets high:
Ask for help. Remember, when Phe goes up, it can affect your thinking.1,5 During those times, you may not always be able to make clear decisions. Knowing when and how to ask for advice is a good way to keep active in the management of your PKU. When your Phe is high, talk to your parents, doctor or dietitian. Let them help you get your Phe level lower again.

Talk with a therapist. High Phe levels can cause problems like depression and anxiety. Find a therapist to help you. Make sure to let your therapist know that you have PKU and it may be causing you to feel this way.6
Set simple rules. While your Phe level is low and you're at your best, work with your doctor, dietitian and family to make some rules that will kick in if Phe gets high. It's good to have a strategy to get your Phe down when it's high and you may not be thinking clearly.
Talk with your doctor and family to come up with ideas that work for you.
