acid reflux issues, knee replacement coming and pku

March 28, 2010 in Uncategorized

I have for years struggled with not only pku but also serious acid reflux. after literally my 15th egd where they had to stretch my throat i finally am getting the message.. i really need to address not only the pku but the things with vinegar in them as well which give food taste. Also need to avoid fat as that irritates it also. ok so i am really trying. my stomach still gnaws etc but i am making progress. just like when i began to address my pku issues i am having a lot of emotions going on at least the last few days with this . Another part of the puzzle is i am having knee sugery on April 20th. total knee replacement. Any of you pku ers been through that . If so please let me know how your experience was . thanks for letting me at least get the words out. any help appreciated. thanks Andi

good thing i wasnt counting on a lot of support here.. but that is ok. As a 50 year old pku gal i can make my
own way. Really it is by the grace of God i can get through.

Have you tried the new So Delicious Coconut yogurt – 30 mg per container. I wonder if that would help soothe your stomach and build the good gut bacteria that will likely decrease your reflux. Here is a link for store locations.

sounds like a lot is going on… if you take it one step at a time you will be able to tackle it i am sure. like you said just like the beginning of any new medical issue it can be overwhelming but put faith in your doctors and more importantly in yourself and you will be able to get through it day by day!

fyi some other irritating things that may trigger reflux or irritate your stomach are spicy foods, hot (temperature) foods, caffine, alcohol, vinegar (like you said) citrus or tomatoes… you may already know this but i thought it might be helpful… do you eat a lot of those things?

i have never been through a knee replacement myself but i work in a hospital and see patients everyday going through this— and you know what i say?! get your protein!!! Make sure you get your formula/pills/food however it is that you get your protein in you IN because after any procedure like that your body has to heal and rebuild which takes protein.

i’ll be thinking and praying for you! and the grace of God is the BEST thing to get you through : ) He’s got your back!!

Thanks so much for your comments. i was kind of panickd at the acid reflux things. and yes i have ate alot of all of that. i have tried to make my food interesting using those things.
i take my formula maybe i could take some extra then? i hope i do well but last surgery i had was a slow healer. wtih my age i seem to be the first one on some things.. been looking for someone that has pku that has been through the knee replacement surgery .. but i dont seem to find anyone.
    no big deal i guess
You are so right about the grace of God being what will get me through.
    appreciated your message very much.
