Coming out of the closet

June 20, 2014 in Living with PKU

This is my first blog and so I am coming out with the most difficult of things to share - admitting that I have PKU. I have been in relationships before but never admitted or disclosed my condition, out of fear of the unknown. How will the person react? Will they think I am not normal and so will not be interested in knowing me better. This is something I have to come out of and be myself. I would love to hear what everyone else has to say about this.

    Hi Susan,

im Melissa i am 26 and i have classic pku. for me having pku has always been a struggle. but i’ve always been really open about my pku. negative things about it as a child i was made fun of alot but as a young adult it got easier and now people are so excepting of it. a possitive being young and made fun of or bullied i guess they call it now. it kinda was a test if they coulndt except that about me then i didnt need that kind of person in my life. now everyone that knows me knows about my pku it doesnt bother me being asked all the questions because it needs to be known. pku has made me stronger as a person even though i still struggle with my diet to this day.

i hope my outlook on this will help and you can message me any time for any questions or support.
