Hey everyone! I could really use some of you as my friends b/c i am fixing to go on my PKU diet after 21 years. I know this is going to be a really hard task. I was let off diet when i was 7 years old. I am 28 years old and i am PKU and i have 2 KIDS, both boys, who, somehow, DO NOT have pku. They are just carriers of the gene. I am experiencing bad mood swings, irritability, im incredibly emotional and its just really starting to take a toll on my life. The only time i have been on my diet these 21 years is when i was pregnant with my boys which by the way, do not have any major issues and are SOO BEAUTIFUL and HEALTHY! I will have to try to get pics up of them both on here. They are 4 and 2. Anyway, i am thinking of going back on diet on monday. I have to get all the food for it and everything this weekend. I could really use some friends on here cause right now..i have one or two friends and thats it..and they have helped me in this decision. So, if you all could please add me or just be really supportive i think it would really help me out a lot. I dont think anyone can understand pku and how difficult it really is except other people with PKU or parents of kids with pku! You all mean the world to me and i am so glad i found this site...GOD BLESS YOU ALL and i do hope you can help me on this LONG LONG JOURNEY!! Its all to better myself as a wife, as a mother and as a person!!!

Maintaining control is definitely worth it even though it is difficult! I’ve been working on that for about the past month. I experience a lot of the same off diet side affects that you do. Since being really careful about my diet lately I’ve been feeling SOO much better. Stay on this site…I think having people to talk & complain to really makes the journey easier.

My Main advise Stacy is DO NOT be to hard on yourself when you go over.. make it easy for yourself.. and put one day every 10 days or so for a Cheat MEAL… it wil not hurt too much.. and it will be good for you..
i will talk to you more about all this.. you can do this.. and 10 gms is not really imposiible.. its damn hard and you know what you WIll fail many times.. like i said dont let it get you down.. get back on track right away!
you can do this! Im here if you need my help.. you have my IM now.. so talk to me… talk to ay soon.. YALL :-)

StayCee… first of all, congrats on your two beautiful children! I am Katie and 25 years old. I have PKU too. I have been following diet all of my life, however I can imagine how difficult it would be to get back on diet. There are so many people on here that will serve as a support system for you while you transition back on to diet. I am hopeful that you will be able to get back on track and will feel better in no time! Glad you are on here – you will enjoy the site :)

Thanks Katie..i greatly appreciate it and all the support from everyone. I look forward to this. I know its going to be hard, especially since i have had all the things most of you havent…like steaks, cheeseburgers and sooo much more!! LOL! It will be hard but i can do it. Im a very strong willed person and well, i gotta do it to be a better person and a better mom and wife..not that i am bad but i have a very understandning hubby! The least i could do is do what is BEST for ME!

I am confident you can do it! Make realistic goals for yourself. If it is difficult to completely give up, start by just being low-pro monday through friday… when you find yourself able to do that, push for one more day on the weekend and hopefully you can eventually get yourself 7 days a week… I find it is much easier for people to start small getting back on diet rather than “cold turkey!”

It is very hard, but if you are determined enough you can do it. I was off for eight years, and returned to it last year (2008). My last level was 5.1. It takes time but if I can do it you can too. Please read my story. Maybe that may help. I will be here for you if you need it. This is my new favorite website. I will be on it all the time. contact me @ anytime. Dana

Hey, hows your diet going ? This is my first day back on diet after probably 8 months to a year off diet. I’ve been starting to get some strange side effects from not following a low phe diet, my memory is completely shot, I can’t remember anything for any length of time (strangely my long term memory always seems to stay pretty sharp) Also my concentration is no good at all, I’m trying to study for my final year in uni but so far things are not going well, I can’t focus, I can’t remember, the only thing I seem to be getting increasingly good at is sleeping – and much as I like sleeping its not a very productive way to spend your time, is it ? So from here is the long hard struggle to keep on the right track as I go forth into my PKU low phe voyage. Wish me luck, and I will for you.

    All the best,
    Jamie

Hi, just wanted to see how you have been doing. I read your post and I am going to restart my diet after 30 years off. I know there are folks here willing to be supportive!
