Enzyme Pills

September 11, 2009 in Uncategorized

Hi, I found an enzyme pill sold at Shoppers Drug Mart that help people to digest protien, caborhydrates and fats. It cost me $18.99 for a bottle. At first I had taken it as directed which is 2 pills before each meal but notice I was getting stomach aches so I cut down to taking one when I am going to eat Garlic and I was able to digest the real garlic without getting sick and vomiting which normally would had happen if I hadnt been taken them pills. I never checked to see if I can eat Strawberry ice-cream but as soon as I get some and try some I will post my results. Them pills sure seem to be helping me alot. With PKU the body doesnt make the enzymes needed to digest protein, caborhydrates and fats and these pills is the missing enzymes needed. However I still have to watch what I eat and not go over board with eating too much of one food which I tend to do alot.

I have never heard of this before. Actually it is just the amino acid phenylalanine that we cannot break down and convert into another amino acid, tyrosine. We are able to digest carbohydrates and fats normally. Like with all medications, I would suggest speaking to your doctor or dietitian before taking this. The only medication I know of that helps lower phenylalanine levels is Kuvan. Unless this pill is lowering your phenylalanine levels it is still not safe for you to eat higher protein foods.

Thes enzymes pills seem to help digest realy garlic. It is new on the shelf for I have never seen it before either, I just been looking in the stores for products that could help me digest foods. I figure if I take the enzyme needed to digest the foods first than my phenylalanine levels wont go high. Does that make sense to you? Of course I still try to watch the food I eat and try not to eat too much protein. It sort of like being a diabetic, just because you take insulin doesnt mean you can eat lots of sugar.

Hi Gracie1605, I am glad to hear that you found them enzyme pills too. I was doing research on PKU for years but never got really serious about it since last year. I got tested once by my family doctor for PKU but never got the results back. I had been asking him since 1997 to be tested but he didnt didnt believe I could have PKU so he never did test me until January 2009 so I dont know what happened to the result. I have to ask him again to test me but it took so long to get that first test done I am kinda scared to ask for another one. He always brushes everything I complain about and even when I feel like I am dieing he looks at me with a straight face and tell me I am so healthy I live to be a 100 years old. I had to resolt to getting the information myself and treating myself. I dont know where to do to get my PHE levels checked. I was hoping I could get a meter to check it myself but so far I can’t find one. Do you know where I can get one?

Hi Gracie1605, A little warning about them enzyme pills too. It says on the bottle to take 2 before each meal. I tried that and it is way to much enzymes for you to take. I was good for 3 days but then I started getting bad graps so I stop taking them for a while. Now I only take them if I plan on eating real garlic. I will take 1 capsule 1/2 hour before I eat and it works great and I dont vomit like I used to when I would eat garlic. I have to buy some strawberry ice-cream to see how I digest that. Before it would always give me diarhea. I get some tomorrow and tell you what happens. Wish me luck cause I love strawberry ice-cream.:)

Hi, I take the enzyme pills and also try to eat food enriched with omega 3 and 6. Omega 3 and 6 has improve my thinking and eye site too. Before I needed glasses to see far ( I could not see a person face from across the street) Now I can even read the signs on the street without being right on top of them. That is awesome!
