hang in there.. I too had a difficult time in high school. Unfortunately, those years alot of social events are centered around eating. Keep your head up and use this website to support yourself to get through this. Life is never easy but it is those bumps along the road that will make you a stronger person.

Have you been taking your formula? I was just talking with another PKU adult yesterday about how not having enough tyrosine (we get it from formula—people without PKU use phe to make tyrosine) can be a big influence on depression/sad moods. If you’re doing what I did in my early teen years and “forgetting” to take your formula, that might help! The struggles you mentioned are definitely very real…for any kid, but we have the added pressure of the phe levels lingering over us. Hang in there, and use this place as a venting source, if needed. If there’s anything I/we can do to help, don’t hesitate to ask.

i think that if you can take baby steps and fix the pku thing then other things will help sort themselves out.. honestly! don’t try and wake up tomorrow and do everything perfect, in my experience when i do that and make a mistake i get down and frustrated. start small… one week make sure you get all your formula… the next week eat right at home the next week make your lunches for school be pku friendly, etc, etc. let us konw how you are doing… if you have one thing to focus on at a time you can slowly work back and figure out the diet… and i bet along the way other things will start to sort themselves out too! keep in touch here, we have all been through it, its tough, but it is nice to know others are out there!
