My Journey through MPKU

August 27, 2009 in Uncategorized

Hi everyone. My name is Anna, I'm 27 and I live in Perth, Western Australia. I've recently joined and have enjoyed reading the forums and posts from people. It's great to have a support network online when you've got PKU. Mine is classical and I've been on diet all my life, although I did have 10 years or so where I sort of went 'semi-off-diet'. What I mean by that is that I still didn't eat meat, eggs, dairy, nuts, legumes etc.. but I did eat pasta and large amounts of things I can only have little of (like chips and popcorn) and things like vegie burgers which are 'not as bad' as eating meat (but now I know they are just as bad really!) I have recently got back on diet properly and even more recently have begun the maternal PKU diet, which is what this blog will be all about. My husband and I recently decided we'd like to start a family, so I got onto it straight away. I've dropped down to 8g a day and I'll probably have to drop down further but just figuring things out at the moment. I've gone up to 4 Lophlex a day. We hope to be able to start trying in about November. So I thought I'd start a blog to record the whole process, just for interests sake and maybe to help someone in future who might go through the maternal PKU diet. I hope it helps anyone else who is doing it at the same time too, just as an encouragement and motivation to keep going :)
