I have a dietitian in Charlottsville, VA who is the best. She might be able to give you someone who is closer to you, her name is Barb Goodin and her e-mail is I have seen her ever since I was 9 years old, and even when I was off the diet I went to see throughout the years. Let her know Kristy Tetrault gave you the information. I am also going back on my diet to have a baby hopefully by the end of this year.

I have 2 healthy non-PKU kids one 18 and one 10 . If you are planning on getting pregnant, I would suggest contacting a nutritionist ASAP. I am treated at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. I don’t know where you are located, but I too, could give you their information. I’ve been treating with this doctor since I was 12. I had to go on the diet and have a Phe level between 2-6 mg/dl for at least 4 weeks before I even began trying to conceive. Also, regarding your other symptoms, I also had problems with depression, anxiousness and always being tired. I started taking Kuvan medication in September 2008. It lowered my Phe levels from over 20 to a range of 5-12 without being on any diet. However, I am now on a modified diet of no meat or dairy for the last 2 months also. I’ve had 2 levels come back as 8.15 and 9.06 and that was while I was on antibiotics for bronchitis, which affect the Phe levels. The combo of the medication and modified have improved my symptoms greatly.

You can do the PKU diet via phone and/or computer. You don’t have to live near a clinic to get treated. When I was pregnant, my OB/GYN worked closely with my PKU professionals for needed monitoring. I did not visit the clinic during that time. All of my nutrition counseling, blood test results, food records, etc. were done over the phone and via the computer. My visits are now limited to once a year, usually in July.

    I hope this helped.
