One Miracle Baby

Hello everyone out there in the PKU community.  I was looking at the photo albums on line, and it gives me hope that my baby boy will grow up to be  big, healthy, and strong.  He was such an unexpected miracle, that even finding out that he had PKU made him all the more special and unique. We are just starting on this journey with our son, but looking forward to meeting others in our situation.  More later.......Sandra

    Hi Sandra,
Congrats on your baby! Welcome to the world of PKU. I can assure you that your baby can lead a healthy and happy life. My name is Katie. I am 25 and have PKU. I was diagnosed at 9 days old. PKU has had tremendous medical advances throughout my life. There have been tremendous improvements in the past 10 years alone. There are not only improvements with medical foods and formulas, but with research and treatment out there as well. I am confident that the PKU community will continue to improve.
In the meantime, this website is a great resource to connect with families in your area and all over the world. It is a great support system for when you have questions or need suggestions. As your baby grows older, I am sure you will have advice to give to new parents one day too! While it is important to learn about PKU and the diet, remember to know your baby will be okay and ENJOY the time! The time will go super fast :)

    Sandra,

Congratulations on your new baby boy. He is absolutely adorable, and I am sure he will grow up to be a wonderful, happy, and healthy man. My name is Breanna. I am nineteen, and I have PKU. Katie pretty much said everything I wanted to say, but please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you.

    Sandra,

    Congrats on your baby boy!
It’s seem like just yesterday that my little baby boy, Dylan was born, but he will be 1 Oct 5!!!
I was a total wreck when I found out about Dylan’s PKU, but this website really helped me.
Now, I am 100% confident that he is going to live a healthy and normal life!
He is my little miracle too!
If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask!
And definitely enjoy every single moment, b/c believe me, these 10.5 months have flown by!

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and support. We try to not take any days for granted with our little boy. I am staying home with him for awhile, which I did not get to do with my older daughter. I have tried to send messages to people on this site, but have had technical problems. So if you have written to me, I am not being rude or ignoring you, I just have not been able to send messages. Hopefully, in time that will be taken care of by tech support. Again, thanks to everyone. I’m sure we will be in contact.

Your little guy is very fortunate to be born now. There are so many new discoveries about PKU and new treatments… My generation was blessed to have better detection available and some beginning research, but younger folks have an even greater advantage. It is sad that 20 years before I was born people were untreated and left to be mentally retarded. “But by the grace of God I am what I am”- it could have been dismal, but it wasn’t. Same for many PKUers.
