Well it’s been a while so I am doing an up date! I have had an exciting few months the Friday before Xmas I found out I was pregnant! The first thing that went threw my mind was all the things that could go wrong with the baby because of my PKU! I was so stressed out the first two weeks trying to get back with my Dr.s and making sure I am on the right formula taking the right about ect! So met with my PKU Dr got all that taking care of and took a blood test to see where my levels were at and they were at 5 or 300 thank you lord for me being on diet! I just found out that my levels are where they are supposed to be so I am super excited! Had my first appt for the baby on Thursday let me tell you that ultra sound was amazing I couldn’t look away from the screen that little baby is really inside me! CRAZY!!!! I really wanted to see the look on my husbands face when he saw the baby but I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen it was amazing! Then the Dr played the heart beat and I asked if it was normal sounding and he said yes at this point I couldn’t help but have a few tears I was full of joy to hear those words “as of now your baby looks completely healthy and NORMAL!” So now it’s keeping to my diet keeping a food record of what I eat during the day and keeping my stress down. I am still scared that I will do something to harm my baby but I am staying positive knowing what I have been doing is working and keeping in contact with all my Dr to make sure I am healthy and my baby is healthy! So if any of you Mom PKUers have any advice for me I would love to hear it and any pkuer that has any snacks that are free that you like let me know I am looking for anything that is free to eat! Thanks for listening and I will keep everyone posted!!Stephanie King

Hi, my name is Kristy, and I have PKU. As of Jaunary 1, 2012 I have been planning on having a baby, hopefully by the end of this year. I was off of my diet since I was 12 years old I am now 37 and within one month my levels are at 3.6, and I have been told that it is okay to stop my birth control pills which I will be doing this Saturday(2/11/2012). Congrats on having your diet under control and I am very happy to hear that everything is going well for you and the baby. I have not even started trying to conceive yet and I am still scared to death and excited all wrapped up in one. If you have any advice please let me know. Thank youy.

    Hi Kristy,
I totally know how you feel its very scary to think about pku and having a baby. To be honest that is why i didnt want to have kids for a long time it was not until I hit abotu 24/25 and got married that I knew it was something I wanted so bad. I know all the hard work will be worth it in the end! Congrats on your diet that is great I went off diet for about 7 years I was just sick of being told I couldnt eat that and not being able to be “normal” but now its not so bad. My adivce is just keep in touch with your pku dr thats been my biggest relief knowing what I need to do and having a game plan to stick too. I got prego a bit sooner then I wanted but I am just happy my levels were ok since that is what really matters. I will keep you posted on how things go and it seems like a lot to handle but you can do it trust me if I can anyone can :)

I am in the same boat as Kmuffet. I have been off plan since I was 14 and am now 28, been married 4 years and really both of us are desperate for a baby – but I am finding it so difficult to get my levels down. Steph65 when I read your news I am not gonna lie I teared up – I am so happy for you and I dont even know you. But it made me think Yes it is possible and others are doing it! I can too. So thank you so much for sharing!! Any words of wisdom you can pass on to us throughout your pregnancy would be greatly appreciated xx

MrsG3013- thank you so much there was so much going threw my mind when I found out but once I knew my levels were ok that made all the diffrence in the world! You can totally do it just get with your PKU Dr find you how much protien you should be taking in each day then keep a diet record….I know its a pain trust me I have never done one before cause its such a pain! But in the end I know all my hard work is going to be worth it and like I told Kristy if I can do it anyone can trust me I was off diet too and have struggled keeping my levels down as well. Once I knew I was pregnant it changed everything now I was not trying to get my levels down for me but for my baby it made it very easy to keep on diet! I will for sure keep everyone posted and pass along any helpful tips :)
