Stupid Aspartame…

November 16, 2009 in Uncategorized

So this weekend I was out and had a drink... it was a Gin and Tonic and it wasn't until my last sip that I realized Hey! That was a pretty good drink, very sweet and not strong... usually I don't like G'nT's, and don't drink them often/at all so I was suprised I liked it... until it dawned on me. Uh-OH, After asking if it was made with DIET tonic water... the answer was unfortunatly YES! I am a little distraught because I have been doing so good! Tonight I came home and told my roomate that I felt almost as if I had a 'high phe' headache.. but couldn't think why? Then I realized I had forgotten this slip up -- but wow could one drink of diet soda really do that? I guess so... I know I have sensitive levels but yowza... Anyone know exactly how much PHE is in aspartame? I probably had 6 oz of Diet Tonic water... how much did that throw me off? I am on the hunt for the answer to this and if I come across it I will share with you all as well. Does anyone else get a headache or any symptoms from drinking or eating aspartame containing products... gah, I wish the whole world would just switch to Splenda and make the world a better place! Haha...

I hear you! I used to be able to get Diet Coke with Splenda.. but that only lasted for a few months.. Now, I cannot find it anywhere!! For me, I never did drink diet – however, I have definitely drank it by accident — and it never did anything to me.. You did say you were sensitive though to PHE… I have a pretty high tolerance, so that might be why it never affected me… Don’t be disappointed about it though – It’s not like you knew! Don’t be hard on yourself — And could the headache be you just drank too much? haha just kidding :)

Fifty percent of aspartame is made up of phenylalanine. The only way you would be able to tell how much phe was in the drink is if you know how much aspartame was in the 6 oz drink.

Awwww…that sucks. But it’s not your fault. Just know that in a few days you’ll be feeling ok. The same thing happens to me though. I feel it INSTANTLY when I eat something I’m not supposed to if I’ve been strictly on diet. Everything just feels off & I get kind of headachy too. Katie, have you found Diet Rite? They make a bunch of different flavors with Splenda, and actually Walgreens Diet Cola is made with Splenda. That’s actually my favorite because it tastes like Vanilla Coke.

I remember once when i was young i drank diet soft drink by accident and my mum rang the dietician and she said that there was 6 units for me at the time which equates to 2gms of protein per 250ml round about. I’m not sure of the amount of phe. Aspartamane itself can give you headaches even if your not PKU. I have many friends that stay right away because of that reason. Don’t be too hard on your self, it was an accident and we all have those!!! I live on diet rite soft drink lorsar!!! they are the best!!

hahaha katie… i suppose it could be, but i didn’t get a headache until 2 days after (and i only had that one very un-strong drink lol) and it felt like a high phe headache… sounds whacky but I have gotten so I can kind of tell the difference (I was pretty much off diet for so long and these specific headaches went away after i came back to my lopro diet) and by the way, have you ever heard of ‘waist watchers’ brand sodas? they are all made with splenda! all the grocery stores out here carry them and for when you are in the mood for soda, they are a great alternative… check them out: http://www.waist-watcher.com

Brea- ya I know about how phe is sneaky and it says “0g” protein but phe itself makes up half of the amount of aspartame… -grr! But I can’t find out how to find out how MUCH aspartame is in each drink, haha that was a tongue twister! I am going to ask my dietitian today to see if i can find out how many grams of aspartame are in diet beverages just out of curiosity… then i should be able to figure it out… i dont drink diet soda so i guess its not life or death haha but still just curious… : )

Lorsar- check out waist watchers too! they have all sorts of flavors, my favorite is raspberry ginger ale!!! and thanks, ya it stinks especially when i didn’t foresee myself slipping up. its one thing if its a holiday or something and i have a few extra exchanges on thanksgiving for example, and i know what happened, but this kind of just took me by surprise… grrrr!!!!

Kellie— ya, I agree, I am not a huge fan of aspartame- phe or no phe! i have heard many people say that they get headaches… so you’re right maybe part of it is not just me and it was because i am not used to aspartame…

i can’t find diet rite soda anywhere! or RC cola (don’t they have splenda diet options too?) I guess my waist watchers will have to do for now lol…

Thanks girls… I am going to be on the hunt this week finding soda with Splenda… I am glad I thought to write that on here because I’ve been wanting it so bad!!! And yes, aspartame can cause people headaches in general… If only those silly waitors/waitresses realized not EVERYONE wants diet soda haha… Also… is there anywhere specific that Diet Rite is sold?

    Katie,
I don’t know where specifically you can get Diet Rite since I’m in Chicago. Pepsi also had Pepsi One, which was made with Splenda. They used to have liter bottles of them in this area but now I can only find them in the 20oz – 6 packs. Some people have been successful at getting local grocery stores to carry certain products like that. I’ve been told that if you can contact the store manager (usually at a larger chain) and tell them about your specific need & that you’ll be buying the product many of them will work with you.

So I talked to my RD today- she said there is about 75 mg of PHE per can of diet soda… this may slightly vary, but she assured me that I am not going crazy, and it is hard to determine the amout because companies don’t like to expose exact measures of aspartame (ie: think of the bad wrap (wrap? rep?)) They have gotten over the past few years about cancer, etc… at least that is what I am assuming is their reasoning…

So hopefully that helps… I know for me it was nice to get an answer just in case someone slips up again – I can know how much it threw me off… : )

I’m sure you noticed there are warning labels on diet sodas for us?

I have done somthing similar. I drank some lite lemonade one time in a restaurant. I drank extra formula to try to counteract the aspartame. I felt terrible afterwards to. I am not sure how much phe is in aspartame, I wish I knew. Let me know if you find out. I also wish the whole world would switch to Splenda, it would make life so much easier for us with PKU.

pattis1313, yes I do know about the warning. The person’s house I was at rarely buys diet anything so it was a fluke that they bought it this time. I am thankful for the warnings but sometimes it can sneak in there…

    Thanks for the support everyone… : )
