The challenges of Managing PKU

June 20, 2009 in Uncategorized

"Hi All, First off, I just logged on to and was pleasantly surprised to see the new site. I think this will go a long way in letting all PKUers communicate with each other. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the challenges of managing PKU - its +'s and -'s. Just a running commentary: I have always looked at diet management as an extension of leading a healthy life. I eat a lot of fruits and veggies and they give me all the energy that I need to leave an active lifestyle. I keep long hours at work and average 5 - 6 hours of sleep. However, I am still able to go about my day without any fatigue, thanks to my eating habits and regular exercising. I think managing PKU leads to a better life management -- the ability to control a strong urge or tendency to a non-healthy lifestyle. Yes, I don't get to eat a burger every day, but honestly, I wouldn't want to. It's a matter of making the right choices and I am so glad I learnt it the PKU way.Cheers!"

Establishing a healthy diet for any chronic condition is important, especially if you have PKU.

I have a hard time staying on diet and i have been trying to live better. I have ate meat for bout 15 years and i really like it. Now the PKU food i never grew accustomed to. The low protein noodles are fine as well its noodles you can always make them better by adding a little tomatos sauce to it which has no added protien. I just cannot see myself eating just fruits and veggies with pasta as well for the rest of my life. even though that is what i should do.
