Working with someone with PKU

Currently, I am a teacher on Long Island and I work with a child with PKU. As many of those who have PKU know, school can be a difficult place to be. He has his share of highs and lows. The school has been working extra hard to provide a warm and caring enviroment for him. What I feel is a major void in his life is sharing his life with someone who truely knows what it is like to live with PKU. I am posting this message to try and find a pen pal for my student. I feel this will give him the extra motivation to do well in school and beyond. I am looking for anyone who would like to help mentor a young fourth grader find himself in the world. Thank you for your time. I hope to hear from you soon! Marc

I am impressed with your dedication as a teacher. My name is Breanna. I am eighteen, and I also have PKU. If it is alright with your students parents and if this is something your student would like I would be more than willing to talk to him. I also have a younger sister who is eleven that also has PKU. She might be interested in talking to him as well. I would have to ask her. Anyway please feel free to send me a message if there is anything else I can do to help.

    Hi Marc,

My name is Katie and I have PKU. I am 25 years old and a teacher too. I am so impressed with the fact that you are a teacher and are going out of your way to find out about PKU and ways to help your student. I’ve never met you, but I can tell you are such a great teacher because you are going out of your way to make a difference. I know I am older than your student, but I would LOVE to write to him and even share my own experiences from when I was in school. If you would like to set something up, I am willing to write back and forth with him. Feel free to email me at katiemag16@aol.com.

Hi Marc. I could pretty much repeat what Katie just said! I’m a 27 year old teacher with PKU also and I also think that it’s fantastic you are doing so much for this kid. I remember when I was in Year 1, my mother spoke to all my teachers and this one made sure I ate my lunch and didn’t trade with others etc. She was great. It’s so helpful to have understanding teachers. There are so many people who have offered already and I’d be glad to help your kid if he needs it. Just let me know :)
